From Neuroscience and Law to Cybersecurity: Jasmine’s Unconventional Career Path

Australia

Experienced professional

Meet Jasmine, the Head of our Cybersecurity Projects and Consulting Practice at ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Australia and New Zealand, who believes that diversity of thought and broad experience are the keys to a rewarding career in cybersecurity. With a career that mixes neuroscience, law and now cybersecurity, Jasmine brings a fresh perspective to the world of cybersecurity and risk.

A Day in the Life of a Cybersecurity Expert

When asked about a typical workday, Jasmine explains, “Every day is not the same…my role is a mixed bag.” With a dynamic mix of strategic planning, project delivery, liaising with clients and managing her large team, Jasmine’s days are as diverse as they are demanding.

“I work with clients across various industries,” Jasmine explains, “from government to energy, utilities, education, and financial institutions.” This variety keeps her on her toes, and she constantly adapts her expertise to sector-specific challenges.

A Unique Approach to Cybersecurity

What sets Jasmine apart is her holistic view of cybersecurity. Drawing from her background in neuroscience and law, she approaches security challenges with a multi-faceted perspective. “Security is not just technology,” she asserts. “There’s so much more to it. There’s also people and process. You can have the right technology implemented, but if you don’t have the right processes in place, and don’t educate your staff, then you’re not effectively mitigating cybersecurity risk.â€

“In cybersecurity, we’re constantly facing new challenges and threats,” Jasmine explains. “Having a team with diverse experiences, perspectives, and ways of thinking gives us a significant advantage. It allows us to approach problems from multiple angles and come up with more creative and effective solutions.”

She continues, “We need diversity [in Cybersecurity] too, not just from a gender perspective but also from career, cultural, and even neurodiverse backgrounds.” Her reasoning is both practical and insightful: “Threat actors are not one specific type. They’re just as diverse as we are. So, if we need to understand how they’re thinking, to be one step ahead, we need to have a diverse group.”

Championing Diversity in Tech

Jasmine’s eyes light up when discussing what excites her about cybersecurity. “I like that cybersecurity is constantly changing,” she enthuses. “You have to be up to date with new technologies and threats. Otherwise, you’re going to be left behind.”

The fast-paced nature of the field keeps her engaged, but it’s challenging. As a woman in a male-dominated field, Jasmine has faced her share of obstacles. However, she sees her gender as an empowering factor. “I can actually help lead the way for other women who want to come into the industry,” she states proudly while mentioning her opportunity to mentor young women in her team, and also when she taught cybersecurity at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).

Looking to the future, Jasmine sees a field ripe with opportunities and challenges. The evolving nature of cyber threats means there’s always something new to learn and tackle.

Advice for Aspiring Cybersecurity Experts

Drawing from her extensive experience in the field, Jasmine offers valuable advice for those aspiring to enter the field. First, she highlights the importance of completing an industry certificate or studying formally at university, which is what she did. Secondly, she stresses the need to stay current with industry trends and news, recognising that the rapidly evolving nature of cybersecurity demands continuous learning and adaptability. She notes, “Someone who’s up to date with the market and well-read, even if it’s just IT security news, is what is really valuable.”

Above all, Jasmine values passion and attitude in potential team members. “If I see someone with passion, that is a hundred times more valuable than someone who’s got the perfect skillset but doesn’t have the right attitude,” she asserts. Highlighting that while technical skills are important, enthusiasm for the field and a willingness to learn are equally crucial for success in cybersecurity at ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½.

Jasmine’s experience at ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ exemplifies the company’s commitment to helping clients and employees “Get The Future You Want.” When asked about this, Jasmine’s response radiates enthusiasm and appreciation for the support she’s received. “The support that I have, the mentoring I have from the firm… just me coming in and them going, ‘Yep, she’s got this,'” she explains, highlights ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½’s trust and confidence in its professionals.

For Jasmine, getting the future she wants isn’t just about personal success—it’s about creating a positive impact in her field and for her clients. ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½’s trust and support have enabled her to explore innovative approaches to cybersecurity and lead her team more effectively. As she puts it, “You are more willing to take risks and more willing to spread your wings and learn new things and be successful.”
