identify anomalous data recorded by its ocean-sensing equipment. The winning teams explain how they used AI to answer this call to action.<\/h2><p class=\"intro-para-content\">Deep underwater, off the coast of Norway\u2019s Lofoten archipelago, a scientific sensor array listens and records. For 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Lofoten-Vester\u00e5len (LoVe) Ocean Observatory produces a stream of chemical, physical, and biological readings.<br><br>Hidden within this data are the songs of humpback whales, the vibrations of vast shoals of migratory herring, and clues to a changing global climate. We were excited to learn the AWS [Amazon Web Services] machine-learning tools, and get experience with this technology.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\" id=\"quoteWrapper\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-true-team-effort\">A true team effort<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>David\u2019s team included Vincent Malmedy, Gabriela Pomery, and Andrew Pennington, all based at the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ office in Bristol. \u201cThe competition was the perfect way to knit the team back together after all the pandemic disruption,\u201d says David.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>For Anupam, his proudest moment was his team\u2019s presentation to the judges. \u201cBefore this, we were ranked in fifth place,\u201d he explains. \u201cBut we had realized the person using our model at the observatory might not have a background in data. So we avoided being too theoretical with our presentation, and I think this helped us claim joint first place overall.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-environmental-ai\">Environmental AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While these technologies shouldn\u2019t be viewed as a \u2018silver bullet\u2019, David believes that AI and machine-learning can help us better understand climate change and global warming. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for human beings to understand all the incremental steps involved in these huge processes.
