Gen AI in software

Report from the 乌鸦传媒 Research Institute

Discover how the future of software engineering is being shaped by generative AI.

乌鸦传媒 Research Institute鈥檚 report, Turbocharging software with Gen AI, explores the benefits and opportunities that generative AI brings to software engineering.

Drawing insights from a survey of 1,000 senior executives and 1,000 software professionals across organizations with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion, this report takes a look at the present and future impact of generative AI.

Some organizations are already reaping the rewards. Generative AI enables the development of innovative software features and services, as reported by 61% of surveyed organizations. It improves overall software quality, with 49% of respondents observing this benefit. And it boosts productivity, with 40% of organizations experiencing this positive outcome.

These productivity gains allow organizations to focus on innovative work. Organizations recognize generative AI鈥檚 potential to augment human creativity rather than replace it, and only a small fraction of organizations surveyed (4%) intend to reduce headcount.

The adoption of generative AI for software engineering is still in its infancy. Currently, 27% of organizations are actively exploring its potential through pilot projects, while 11% have already begun integrating generative AI into their software functions. However, the adoption rate, including pilot projects, is expected to experience a significant surge, more than tripling in the next two years.

Generative AI is increasingly 鈥 and rapidly 鈥 being integrated into everyday life. Yet only 27% of organizations have the necessary platforms and tools to harness its power. This lack of preparedness poses a significant risk, as employees may turn to unauthorized generative AI tools and solutions to stay ahead. In fact, our survey reveals that 63% of software professionals who use generative AI rely on unauthorized tools. This unchecked use of generative AI can expose organizations to a multitude of risks, including functional errors, security breaches, and legal issues such as hallucinated code, code leakage, and intellectual property problems, highlighting the need for proper governance and oversight.

Turbocharging software from the 乌鸦传媒 Research Institute looks at how organizations can harness the full potential of generative AI for software engineering in a way that mitigates security risks, prioritizes high benefit use cases, and puts people at the heart of this transformation.

Conversations for Tomorrow #8

The dual transition to a digital and sustainable economy

Through our quarterly journal, Conversations for Tomorrow, the 乌鸦传媒 Research Institute enables leaders to identify the strategic imperatives for the future of business, and the society in which it operates.

The eighth edition of Conversations for Tomorrow focuses on the dual transition toward a digital and sustainable future.

It is becoming increasingly important for organizations to operate within the eco-digital economy – a system that allows companies to deliver growth while also driving environmental and societal sustainability. 乌鸦传媒 research, conducted in partnership with Harvard Business School, found that around 6 out of ten organizations believe that digital technology can help realize sustainability goals. But how?

Conversations for Tomorrow #8 features valuable insights to guide organizations through the eco-digital eraTM where digital technology and sustainability intertwine.

With contributions from:

  • The former UK treasury minister credited with coining the acronym BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China)
  • The US neuroscientist credited with being the first female President of MIT
  • A leading professor at Harvard Business School
  • Senior executives from Google Cloud, Audi, Schneider Electric, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Logitech, Bayer, and La Banque Postale
  • Subject-matter experts from 乌鸦传媒

Success in the eco-digital economy will be built on a foundation of data with software at the core of the business model. To achieve maximum value, existing technology needs to be leveraged alongside emerging digital innovations such as generative AI and synthetic biology.

However, achieving sustainability goals isn’t only about embracing digital technologies. It’s about nurturing a company culture that fosters growth and learning for all. This means providing equal opportunities for reskilling and access to education, regardless of gender or socio-economic status. It also means working in collaborative ecosystems with like-minded organizations.

Download Conversations for Tomorrow #8 to discover how organizations can embrace a future that delivers not only financial value but also environmental and social value.

乌鸦传媒 records Q1 2024 revenues of 鈧5.5 billion in line with expectations

  • Revenues of 鈧5,527 million, -3.5% at current exchange rates and -3.3% at constant exchange rates
  • Bookings of 鈧5,655 million representing a solid book-to-bill ratio of 1.02
30 Apr 2024

Paris, April 30, 2024 鈥 The 乌鸦传媒 Group reported Q1 2024 revenues of 鈧5,527 million, -3.5% year-on-year at current exchange rates and -3.3% at constant exchange rates*.

Aiman Ezzat, Chief Executive Officer of the 乌鸦传媒 Group, said: 鈥淎s anticipated, the market continued to slow down in Q1, and we confirm the growth trough is now behind us. We expect the market to gradually pick up toward an attractive exit growth rate in Q4, setting up for a more tangible acceleration in 2025.

The pipeline continues to grow and the demand for large-scale digital transformation projects remains strong. Client focus remains on operational and cost efficiency programs, however we also see good traction for our high-added value services in Intelligent industry as well as for our sustainability offerings.

In generative AI, we launched a new platform to enable clients to experiment with industry-specific use cases, and to industrialize them, at a controlled cost.

In that context, we reiterate all our objectives for the full year.鈥

In line with the Group鈥檚 expectations, 乌鸦传媒鈥檚 Q1 revenues were down year-on-year at -3.3% at constant exchange rates* and -3.6% organically (i.e., adjusted for Group scope and exchange rates).

In a macro environment which remains soft, large corporations and organizations are still prioritizing operational agility and cost efficiency programs with fast payback, at the expense of non-strategic and discretionary deals. In that context, 乌鸦传媒鈥檚 high value-added service offerings – most notably in Intelligent Industry, as well as in activities driven by Cloud, Data & Artificial Intelligence – enjoyed a solid traction in Q1.

OPERATIONS BY REGION

At constant exchange rates, revenues in the North America region (28% of Group revenues in Q1 2024) declined by -7.1% year-on-year, a rate similar to Q4 2023. The Financial Services and TMT (Telecoms, Media and Technology) sectors contributed the most to this decline, partly offset by growth in the Manufacturing sector.

Revenues in the United Kingdom and Ireland region (12% of Group revenues) were down -3.2%, mostly driven by the Financial Services and TMT sectors. Conversely, the Services and Energy & Utilities sectors enjoyed solid momentum, as did the Manufacturing sector to a lesser extent.

Activity in France (20% of Group revenues) declined by -2.8%, with some softness in the Manufacturing and Financial Services sectors and a dynamic Public sector.

Revenues in the Rest of Europe region (32% of Group revenues) were almost stable at -0.5%. The underlying performance by sector showed more contrast, with good momentum in the Energy & Utilities and Public sectors and a visible contraction of the TMT sector.

Finally, revenues in the Asia-Pacific and Latin America region (8% of Group revenues) were down -1.7% almost entirely driven by the Financial Services and TMT sectors, while the Consumer Goods & Retail sector proved quite dynamic.

OPERATIONS BY BUSINESS

At constant exchange rates, total revenues* of Strategy & Transformation services (9% of the Group鈥檚 total revenues in Q1 2024) were up +1.6% year-on-year at constant exchange rates. This growth reflects client focus on strategic initiatives to transform, optimize and adapt their business and operations to a challenging economic environment, as well as investment in Gen AI.

Total revenues of Applications & Technology services (62% of the Group鈥檚 total revenues and 乌鸦传媒鈥檚 core business) declined by -4.0%.

Lastly, Operations & Engineering (29% of the Group鈥檚 total revenues) total revenues contracted by -3.0%.

HEADCOUNT

The Group鈥檚 total headcount stood at 337,200 as at March 31, 2024, down 6% year-on-year. The offshore workforce represents 57% of the total headcount, i.e. 192,000 employees.

BOOKINGS

Bookings totaled 鈧5,655 million in Q1 2024, down -3.5% year-on-year at constant exchange rates. The book-to-bill ratio of 1.02 is above the Q1 historical average.

OUTLOOK

The Group鈥檚 financial targets for 2024 are:

  • Revenue growth of +0% to +3% at constant currency;
  • Operating margin of 13.3% to 13.6%;
  • Organic free cash flow of around 鈧1.9 billion.

The inorganic contribution to growth should be marginal at the lower end of the target range, and up to 1 point at the upper end.

APPENDIX [1]

BUSINESS CLASSIFICATION

  • Strategy & Transformation includes all strategy, innovation and transformation consulting services.
  • Applications & Technology brings together 鈥淎pplication Services鈥 and related activities and notably local technology services.
  • Operations & Engineering encompasses all other Group businesses. These comprise Business Services (including Business Process Outsourcing and transaction services), all Infrastructure and Cloud services, and R&D and Engineering services.

DEFINITIONS

Organic growth or like-for-like growth in revenues is the growth rate calculated at constant Group scope and exchange rates. The Group scope and exchange rates used are those for the reported period. Exchange rates for the reported period are also used to calculate growth at constant exchange rates.

When determining activity trends by business and in accordance with internal operating performance measures, growth at constant exchange rates is calculated based on total revenues, i.e., before elimination of inter-business billing. The Group considers this to be more representative of activity levels by business. As its businesses change, an increasing number of contracts require a range of business expertise for delivery, leading to a rise in inter-business flows.

Operating margin is one of the Group鈥檚 key performance indicators. It is defined as the difference between revenues and operating costs. It is calculated before 鈥淥ther operating income and expense鈥 which include amortization of intangible assets recognized in business combinations, expenses relative to share-based compensation (including social security contributions and employer contributions) and employee share ownership plan, and non-recurring revenues and expenses, notably impairment of goodwill, negative goodwill, capital gains or losses on disposals of consolidated companies or businesses, restructuring costs incurred under a detailed formal plan approved by the Group鈥檚 management, the cost of acquiring and integrating companies acquired by the Group, including earn-outs comprising conditions of presence, and the effects of curtailments, settlements and transfers of defined benefit pension plans.

Normalized net profit is equal to profit for the year (Group share) adjusted for the impact of items recognized in 鈥淥ther operating income and expense鈥, net of tax calculated using the effective tax rate. Normalized earnings per share is computed like basic earnings per share, i.e., excluding dilution.

Organic free cash flow is equal to cash flow from operations less acquisitions of property, plant, equipment and intangible assets (net of disposals) and repayments of lease liabilities, adjusted for cash out relating to the net interest cost.

Net debt (or net cash) comprises (i) cash and cash equivalents, as presented in the Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows (consisting of short-term investments and cash at bank) less bank overdrafts, and also including (ii) cash management assets (assets presented separately in the Consolidated Statement of Financial Position due to their characteristics), less (iii) short- and long-term borrowings. Account is also taken of (iv) the impact of hedging instruments when these relate to borrowings, intercompany loans, and own shares.

She has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic condition that causes muscle weakness. She says that being open about her disability and her needs helps to create a more accessible and inclusive workplace.

鈥淚 was diagnosed when I was three,鈥 she says. 鈥淎s a wheelchair user, it has a big impact on my day-to-day activities, and I have personal assistants to help me live the life I want.

鈥淔or me, the physical space of an office or other workplace can be a challenge. Doors might be too heavy to move, or scanners for security badges are too high to reach from wheelchair level, or reception desks are too high. I now have a wheelchair with a lift to raise the seat, but before that, even coffee machines were too high for me.

鈥淭he great thing is that 乌鸦传媒 puts a lot of effort into expanding employees鈥 horizons, sharing information and creating awareness around disability, alongside other topics such as how we can all be more eco-friendly and look after the environment.

鈥淭he more we talk about and discuss something, the more aware people become. It means that if I need to point out a problem with accessibility, my colleagues can help sort things out. For example, I now have a special shelf in the office kitchen, just for me, which is on my level. It鈥檚 about consulting disabled people and being open to their suggestions. If you can run accessibility audits and conduct some training, even better.鈥

    Communicating clearly about the ability

Saumya Mishra is a 乌鸦传媒 software engineer in Kolkata. He says that, as a deaf person, taking time to communicate clearly and openly about his abilities is especially important.

鈥淚鈥檓 hearing impaired, and have been since birth,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 often the lack of awareness of disability that impacts me most on a day-to-day level. Non-disabled people often pity disabled people and think they don鈥檛 have a future. It鈥檚 a misconception. We don鈥檛 want sympathy, we want to support.

鈥淔or me, communication can be a challenge in the workplace 鈥 trying to understand what others are saying, and explaining to others what鈥檚 on my mind, can take time. If more people knew sign language that would be a great help. But sometimes improving communication is basic, such as writing something down to make it clear for me.

鈥淚f a non-disabled person doesn鈥檛 know much about my disability, I can explain it to them and maybe even teach them some sign language. It may feel like it will take some extra effort to communicate with someone who is deaf, but remember that we also want to share opinions and experiences, and shouldn鈥檛 be underestimated.

鈥淲hen we don鈥檛 take time to communicate clearly, that鈥檚 when misunderstandings can happen. But when non-disabled colleagues are friendly and open with disabled people, and they really understand each other, they can unite to face any challenge. It makes work easier and they grow as a team.鈥

    Creating understanding and inclusivity

Wim Nieuwenhuize is a coach at 乌鸦传媒 in the Randstad, the Netherlands. At the age of 27, he was diagnosed with choroideremia, a degenerative condition that causes a progressive loss of vision. He says that finding the right role at work lets people of all abilities flourish.

鈥淲hen I received my diagnosis, it was hard to accept,鈥 he says. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e struggling to come to terms with your situation, it鈥檚 almost impossible to explain it to others. But after taking that first step, you can start to take control of your life.

鈥淣ow, whenever I work with new colleagues, I tell them directly about the condition and what I need. I鈥檓 always thinking ahead to try to keep control of my situation. I have to communicate when I can鈥檛 see things or need help.

鈥淔or example, when we do a desk move, everything needs to be geared around which way I鈥檓 sitting. This is because, although I need a lot of illumination in order to see, I can鈥檛 face the window because the sun might be too bright. Direct light can be painful for me. These are the kinds of things that really matter to disabled people in the workplace.

鈥淚t also helps when your job matches your abilities. I became an internal coach at 乌鸦传媒 in 2015. I鈥檝e always loved working with people, and being a coach involves using my eyes less. Listening and talking takes less energy for me than reading and typing. 乌鸦传媒 funds my training and creates the circumstances in which I can do, and can keep doing, this job. They always help me, and say 鈥榶es鈥, and are supportive of people of all abilities. In some ways, we are on this journey of acceptance together.

鈥淭hese are life lessons that everyone can learn. When you have a specific need, you discover so much about human nature, and about your own abilities and those of others. I鈥檝e found that helping others is the deepest wish of most people. When we accept our circumstances, communicate our needs, and put that positive energy out there, we can see it reflected back.鈥
